Who buys packaging in East London
East London has a port, an industrial development zone near the airport and a long-established motor industry, with vehicle and component plants around Mdantsane and the Sunnyridge and Wilsonia areas. Component makers ship parts in protective packaging, strong cartons and returnable packs, while the port handles motor vehicles, agricultural goods and general cargo that need pallet wrap and strapping. Food processors and dairy producers in the region buy tubs, bags and cartons, and shops and online sellers across the city use courier bags and mailers. Packaging suppliers serve the city from its industrial areas, with larger orders sometimes coming from Gqeberha or Durban. Coastal humidity affects board and tape.
Typical glass jars requests in the area come from:
- Factories and manufacturers: bulk jars for sauces, relish and salsa filled on a small production line
- Warehouses, distributors and exporters: jars on shrink-wrapped pallets with layer pads for distributors and fillers
- Restaurants, takeaways and food producers: lug cap jars for jam, pickles and sauces, and small screw-top jars for spices
- Farms, packhouses and nurseries: jars for farm-stall honey, chutney, jam and dried herbs sold at markets
- Shops and retail stores: decorative storage jars and candle jars for gift and homeware shelves
- Online shops and ecommerce: jars with lids for honey, preserves and candles packed to post in padded cartons
