Who buys packaging in Durban
Durban is the busiest port in the country, so a great deal of packaging here is built around export and import freight. Manufacturers, food processors, chemical and plastics firms, and distributors in Prospecton, Jacobs, Pinetown and the southern basin ship in cartons, pallet wrap and strapping. Online shops and retailers across the metro need courier bags, mailers and gift boxes, while the sugar and agricultural trade along the coast uses sacks, bags and bulk packs. Humid summers and salty air can weaken board, so many buyers ask for moisture-resistant cartons. Packaging suppliers and box makers are based in the industrial areas of the south and west and deliver across the metro.
Typical plastic bottles requests in the area come from:
- Factories and manufacturers: HDPE drums and bottles for lubricants, detergents, paints and chemicals
- Warehouses, distributors and exporters: bottles sold by the carton and pallet to distributors and fillers
- Restaurants, takeaways and food producers: PET and PP bottles for juice, sauces, dressings, syrups and cooking oil
- Online shops and ecommerce: small bottles with pumps or droppers for hair, skin and household products sold online
- Shops and retail stores: ready-filled bottles for house brands of cleaning and personal care products
- Farms, packhouses and nurseries: HDPE bottles for dips, foliar feeds and liquid fertiliser, and PET for farm-gate juice
- Households and offices moving: small leak-proof bottles for decanting cleaning liquids and toiletries when relocating
