Who buys packaging in Mthatha
Mthatha is the main commercial centre of the Wild Coast and the former Transkei, serving a wide rural region. Wholesalers, retailers, building suppliers and food sellers in the town buy cartons, bags, takeaway containers and wrapping. Farmers and small producers in the surrounding district, including maize growers, livestock keepers and craft makers, use sacks, bags, tubs and jars. Online sellers rely on courier bags and mailers. Packaging suppliers are not concentrated in Mthatha, so most orders are delivered from East London, Gqeberha or Durban and take a few days longer. The roads can be long and rough in rural areas, so sturdy cartons and good tape help goods arrive in one piece.
Typical plastic bottles requests in the area come from:
- Shops and retail stores: ready-filled bottles for house brands of cleaning and personal care products
- Restaurants, takeaways and food producers: PET and PP bottles for juice, sauces, dressings, syrups and cooking oil
- Farms, packhouses and nurseries: HDPE bottles for dips, foliar feeds and liquid fertiliser, and PET for farm-gate juice
- Online shops and ecommerce: small bottles with pumps or droppers for hair, skin and household products sold online
- Warehouses, distributors and exporters: bottles sold by the carton and pallet to distributors and fillers
- Factories and manufacturers: HDPE drums and bottles for lubricants, detergents, paints and chemicals
