Who buys packaging in Upington
Upington lies on the Orange River in the Northern Cape, where irrigation supports table grapes, raisins, dates and other crops. Packhouses and dried fruit producers use export cartons, punnets, liners and pallet wrap, and fruit is trucked to Cape Town for export. Wine and other food related businesses buy bottles, cartons and food packaging. Solar and mining related projects in the wider region add demand for heavy packaging. Local shops and wholesalers buy bags and cartons. Packaging suppliers are mostly in Cape Town, Bloemfontein or Gauteng, so deliveries cover very long distances, and harvest season demands early ordering.
Typical packaging machines requests in the area come from:
- Farms, packhouses and nurseries: weighing and bagging machines, vacuum sealers and pallet wrappers for packhouses
- Restaurants, takeaways and food producers: chamber vacuum sealers, band sealers and tray sealers for meat, deli and ready meals
- Warehouses, distributors and exporters: pallet wrappers, strapping machines and case sealers for outbound loads
- Shops and retail stores: bag sealers, shrink wrap stations and tape dispensers behind the counter
- Factories and manufacturers: L-bar and tunnel systems, carton sealers and strapping heads on the line
- Online shops and ecommerce: impulse sealers, small shrink systems and carton tapers for daily parcel volumes
