Who buys packaging in Upington
Upington lies on the Orange River in the Northern Cape, where irrigation supports table grapes, raisins, dates and other crops. Packhouses and dried fruit producers use export cartons, punnets, liners and pallet wrap, and fruit is trucked to Cape Town for export. Wine and other food related businesses buy bottles, cartons and food packaging. Solar and mining related projects in the wider region add demand for heavy packaging. Local shops and wholesalers buy bags and cartons. Packaging suppliers are mostly in Cape Town, Bloemfontein or Gauteng, so deliveries cover very long distances, and harvest season demands early ordering.
Typical shrink wrap requests in the area come from:
- Farms, packhouses and nurseries: sleeving jars and bottles of sauce, honey and juice sold at farm stalls
- Restaurants, takeaways and food producers: bundling bottled drinks and wrapping cheese, tinned goods and dry goods in food-safe film
- Warehouses, distributors and exporters: PE film hoods and heavy sheets over outdoor pallets and building materials
- Shops and retail stores: wrapping display packs, cards and boxed stock for shelves and counters
- Factories and manufacturers: covering parts and bundling product multipacks on a small packing line
- Online shops and ecommerce: sealing books, games and boxed gifts so they arrive clean and tamper-evident
