Who buys packaging in Welkom
Welkom grew around the Free State goldfields, and its packaging demand is tied to mining services, farming and local trade. Engineering workshops and mining suppliers ship parts and equipment in strong cartons and wrapped pallets, although the industry has shrunk over the years. Surrounding maize, sunflower and livestock farms create demand for bags and bulk packaging. Local bakeries, butcheries and wholesalers buy food packaging, while shops and small online sellers use bags, cartons and courier packaging. Packaging suppliers serve the area from Welkom itself, from Bloemfontein and from Johannesburg, so buyers often combine orders to reduce delivery cost.
Typical cardboard boxes requests in the area come from:
- Farms, packhouses and nurseries: ventilated, wax-free fruit and vegetable cartons for packhouses and markets
- Shops and retail stores: plain cartons for stock deliveries, returns and shop storage
- Restaurants, takeaways and food producers: double wall cartons for dry goods, bottles and bakery trays to wholesale clients
- Factories and manufacturers: made to size cartons and dividers to protect finished goods
- Warehouses, distributors and exporters: strong double wall export cartons that stack on pallets without crushing
- Online shops and ecommerce: single wall shipping cartons in a few sizes for courier parcels
