Who buys packaging in Welkom
Welkom grew around the Free State goldfields, and its packaging demand is tied to mining services, farming and local trade. Engineering workshops and mining suppliers ship parts and equipment in strong cartons and wrapped pallets, although the industry has shrunk over the years. Surrounding maize, sunflower and livestock farms create demand for bags and bulk packaging. Local bakeries, butcheries and wholesalers buy food packaging, while shops and small online sellers use bags, cartons and courier packaging. Packaging suppliers serve the area from Welkom itself, from Bloemfontein and from Johannesburg, so buyers often combine orders to reduce delivery cost.
Typical protective packaging requests in the area come from:
- Farms, packhouses and nurseries: dividers and moulded pulp for bottled sauces, oils, wine and eggs from the farm
- Shops and retail stores: foam and paper wrapping for homeware, ceramics and glass sold from the shop
- Restaurants, takeaways and food producers: dividers and inserts for bottles, jars and gift hampers, and cushioning for delicate goods
- Factories and manufacturers: cut foam, honeycomb and corner boards that hold finished products in the carton
- Warehouses, distributors and exporters: edge boards and honeycomb for pallets so loads survive stacking and long routes
- Online shops and ecommerce: paper void fill and air pillows so fragile orders arrive intact and boxes stay light
