Who buys packaging in Welkom
Welkom grew around the Free State goldfields, and its packaging demand is tied to mining services, farming and local trade. Engineering workshops and mining suppliers ship parts and equipment in strong cartons and wrapped pallets, although the industry has shrunk over the years. Surrounding maize, sunflower and livestock farms create demand for bags and bulk packaging. Local bakeries, butcheries and wholesalers buy food packaging, while shops and small online sellers use bags, cartons and courier packaging. Packaging suppliers serve the area from Welkom itself, from Bloemfontein and from Johannesburg, so buyers often combine orders to reduce delivery cost.
Typical cosmetic packaging requests in the area come from:
- Farms, packhouses and nurseries: bottles and jars for aloe, rooibos and marula oil products made on farms
- Shops and retail stores: boxed serums, creams and perfumes with matching containers for shelf display
- Restaurants, takeaways and food producers: small jars and bottles for infused oils, honey and gourmet extracts sold as gifts
- Factories and manufacturers: bulk tubes, pumps and jars filled on a contract-manufacturing line
- Warehouses, distributors and exporters: cartons of empty containers stored on pallets for fillers and brand owners
- Online shops and ecommerce: small droppers, pumps and tubes plus mailer boxes for skincare sold online
